When we returned
from Singapore we saw that there were suddenly several incredibly ornate and
intricate nativity scenes on Ateneo’s campus. Each nativity scene had a sign
showing which particular group or school of students had built it. Each scene
was meant to represent a nativity scene as though it had taken place in a
particular region of the Philippines so the signs also explained the
significance of all the various things. For example, the nativity scene for
Davao, Mindanao, had a backdrop of mountains, stuffed eagles, and featured some
instruments from the region.
When we went for our evening walk on 29 November we saw
that all of these scenes also had lots of lights and that the groups were
actually competing with each other. We walked around campus listening to some
of the guides explaining their group’s efforts.
