We’ve had a busy week here
and it just gets busier over the next few days. On Wednesday night we went with
friends to see a film in Makati that was part of the Spanish film festival
sponsored by Instituto Cervantes. Yesterday we went down to the Lopez Museum
where Fritz did research at the Lopez library and Grace and the new Irish VRA
stocked up on supplies at Megamall. We’re heading off in a little bit to
Mercato Centrale and Salcedo Market for yet another full day. Tomorrow we rest
before heading off for a two-day trip to the 100 Islands for a retreat with the
faculty and staff of the Institute of Philippine Culture at Ateneo.
I’ve made several audio recordings to show a better sense of our
neighborhood:
Mornings here begin a little after 5:00 when the sun begins to rise. The
roosters crow quite enthusiastically for a while and wake up the dogs, who then
join in with their barking. People seem to get up fairly early around here,
probably to beat the heat or to commute to other parts of Manila.
On Friday evenings we can often hear karaoke from neighboring homes. Two
Fridays ago the sounds of Whitney Houston saturated the whole neighborhood.
Our walk home from Ateneo to our apartment has quite a bit of variety forsuch a short trip. You can hear some roosters and the quiet of the small alleys
at the beginning of our walk and the sounds of one of the continual basketball
games at the Barangka community center. These shift to the noises of tricycles
and other vehicles on our final jaunt on General Julian Cruz before reaching
the small alleyway that leads to our apartment.
