20 January 2013
We just arrived back in Manila this morning. We’ll try to
finish up our Indonesia posts over the next few days. Below are a few more photos
and videos from Yogyakarta, Java.
The restaurant where we ate on our last night in Yogya had
two music ensembles. The first was a small gamelan ensemble that mainly
featured the gender and slenthem (and some of the quietest drumming I’ve ever
heard). A country band was also playing downstairs. They had a singer playing
rhythm guitar, a bassist, a very good lead guitarist, and a drummer playing
conga drums. Steve and John talked about requesting a song from the band. Steve
was trying to think of some obscure Hank Williams tunes but John asked them toplay “Country Roads.” Turns out, this is one of the most requested songs among
Javanese country bands so the group got to look pretty good when they went
right into it.
We’ll try to put
up a post about our trip to Ubud, Bali, some time in the next few days.
