Food, lights, animals
In the past few
days one of the workers at the Barangka Credit Cooperative has festooned the two
BCC buildings with lights. The highlight of the main building is a giant palm
tree that flashes in bright colors. On our building there is a big tree on the
corner of the roof that has brilliant lights that we worry might cause a
seizure. There’s also a Santa with reindeers that get lit up in the evenings.
As the worker told us after he put up the lights, “It’s November 2, only 45
days until Christmas!”

This past weekend
we went with some friends down near Little Tokyo in Makati. We didn’t actually
go into Little Tokyo because apparently everything is too expensive there.
Instead, we went to a delicious Japanese restaurant called Nihonbashi Tei. We
had our own little room shut off from the rest of the restaurant and, as tends
to happen when we eat with our Filipino friends, we ended up with a ton of
food. We had a delicious sushi roll, some incredibly rich seafood ramen,
various types of sashimi, and then a bunch of meat with a tasty teriyaki sauce.
Afterwards we walked over to an Italian place that had good gelato and cakes.

A few more
updates on animals on Ateneo’s campus: a few weeks ago after a big rain we
noticed tons of tiny little frogs hopping around on the sidewalks. They were
dark and about the size of a fingernail. We’ll try to get a photo of them after
the next big rain. We’ve seen some giant spiders and this morning I finally saw
a monster snail oozing across the sidewalk. Workers had just mowed the lawns so
it was covered in grass.

We don’t have any
trips or social events planned this week or next so we’re looking forward to a
low-key time until we head off for Hong Kong in late November. Tomorrow we may
go to a big Election Day party hosted by the U.S. Embassy at one of the giant
malls.
